Microchannels

What are Microchannels?

Microchannels are tiny, precise wounds created on the top layer of your skin, the epidermis, created during our Fractional and Ultra Duo treatments.

Microchannels safely injure the skin to initiate a natural healing response that stimulates collagen and elastin production, leading to smoother, healthier, younger-looking skin. They also provide a channel for our medical-grade serums to reach maximal absorption in the dermal layer of the skin.

How are Microchannels created?

During our Fractional and Ultra Duo treatments, the laser we use creates thousands of microchannels in the skin while leaving the outermost layer, stratum corneum, intact, leading to minimal side effects and little recovery time. All of our lasers at Skin Laundry are non-ablative as they do not harm the surface layer of the skin.

Why are Microchannels beneficial?

Microchannels allow products to penetrate the skin more effectively

providing optimal results more quickly! They allow our medical-grade serums to be absorbed into the skin by 80-90%, versus 10-15% of when you apply serums normally on your skin.

When the microchannels are created, the dermis (second layer of the skin) heats up building collagen and elastin, which is then paired with customized medical-grade serums that can diminish fine lines, smooth out irregular skin texture, remove dead skin cells, fade acne scars, and break up unwanted pigment such as PIH and sunspots.

How long do Microchannels last?

Microchannels typically stay open for about 24 hours,

depending on how fast your skin heals. During this time it is essential to be very gentle and avoid scrubs, acids, SPF, makeup, sweating, and introducing new products. Microchannels enter the healing phase for 2-3 days, where you may notice some texture on the skin. By day 4 they are healed and the skin looks and feels smooth.

How is this different from Microneedling?

Microneedling is a method of creating micro-injury over the treatment area using tiny needles that force the skin to heal.

Whereas, Skin Laundry's Fractional Laser is a needle-free treatment that delivers heat energy to penetrate the skin’s surface, heating the tissue, creating microchannels, and triggering a healing response.

Acne

What is acne?

Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil & dead skin cells, causing whiteheads, blackheads or pimples.

It may be caused by increased sebum/oil production, hormonal changes,
dietary sensitivities, inflammation, debris from skin cells, or the presence of Propionibacterium Acnes (acne causing bacteria).

the Signature for acne

The Nd:YAG laser zaps away dirt, bacteria, and oil on the skin, calms inflammation, and breaks up discoloration from active acne. The laser also targets the dermal layer (second layer of the skin), reducing the inflammation and redness.

Post-treatment Serum: Brightening Serum with Glycolic Acid

At Home:

Follow up with a Hydrating sheet mask post-treatment. Continue to use a mild retinol to further dry out the acne and increase cell turnover.

* Treatment recommendations will be determined based on your skin consultation with a registered nurse.

the Ultra Duo for acne

The Nd:YAG laser will help reduce the redness, inflammation, and bacteria from the acne. The Fractional laser will then help with the post inflammatory hyperpigmentation formed from the acne and help reduce any textured acne scarring.

Post-treatment Serum:
Vitamin A medical-grade serum to target blemishes, unblock pores, and promote cell turnover.

At Home: Follow up with a Hydrating sheet mask post-treatment. Continue to use a mild retinol to further dry out the acne and increase cell turnover.

* Treatment recommendations will be determined based on your skin consultation with a registered nurse.

Melanin

What is Melanin?

Melanin is a natural pigment that gives color to skin, hair and eyes.

Skin cells called melanocytes produce melanin.

Who has Melanin?

Everyone has the same number of melanocytes, but some people make more melanin than others! This all depends on your genetics.

More Melanin = Dark skin, eyes & hair
Less Melanin = Light skin, eyes & hair

3 types of Melanin
Melanin & Sun exposure

With exposure to UV light, melanocyte production ramps up, and the skin darkens as melanin levels rise. It may help protect the body from harmful UV rays, but broad-spectrum sunscreen should always be worn to prevent damage.

Melanin & Melasma

Melasma is caused by an increase in melanin production.

This increase is thought to be triggered by changes in hormone levels, especially those caused by pregnancy and oral contraceptives, as well as by the sun.

Signature Laser facials

No melanocyte cells are harmed during the treatments, making our laser facials safe and effective for all skin types & tones!

Why?

Due to the unique wavelength of our Nd:YAG laser, it bypasses the top layer of the skin and effectively targets discoloration that resides deep within the skin. This unique characteristic does not affect the natural pigment on the skin surface that determines your skin tone.

Fractional Laser facial

Our Fractional laser is uniquely designed to be non-ablative and
selectively targets melanin and unwanted pigmentation, irregular texture, fine lines & wrinkles on the skin surface.

Safe for all!

How to find your skin type

It can be tricky.

Because it can change over time and can be affected by climate, hormones and diet.
To find out your skin type, we recommend washing your face, patting dry, not applying any products and waiting 1-2 hours for your skin to return to its current natural state. Use our guide to match up how your skin looks & feels to determine your skin type.

Maskne

Maskne

If you’ve been wearing a mask in public, we see you, and we THANK YOU!

Keep up the good work keeping yourself and others safe! We know that wearing a mask can be hard on your skin causing acne, peeling, rashes and/or itchiness. That’s why we've gathered these helpful tips and tricks from our medical team to help!

Skip the makeup

Beneath a mask, makeup is more likely to clog your pores and lead to breakouts.

If makeup is necessary, try using products labeled “non-comedogenic."

Find a mask that fits

You’re more likely to adjust a poorly fitting mask.

If your mask feels too tight or slides around on your face it can irritate your skin. Be sure to clean your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer before making any adjustments.

Be selective with the material

Synthetic fabrics such as nylon, polyester, and rayon may irritate the skin and lead to breakouts.

Instead, look for masks made from cotton and silk fabrics. If you are using a disposable mask, remember they are only meant to be worn once.

Wash your cloth masks

Oils on your skin and particles that you breathe out collect on your mask.

Try and wash your mask after each use (or wear a fresh one each day). Hot water and your favorite face-wash are the way to go!

Follow a gentle skin care routine

Use a gentle cleanser to avoid more irritation, and apply moisturizer before and after wearing your mask.

Treat yourself with a mask your skin will love like our Hydrating Sheet Mask to restore and lock in moisture!

Purging

What is it? Why does it happen?

What is it: Pimples & small bumps.

Why does it happen: As your skin cell turnover rate increases, your skin may “purge” all of the dead skin, congestion, and sebum that was already underneath the surface. Our treatments are also driving the bacteria out of the skin. With consistent treatments chances of purging will decrease because your skin will get cleaner with every treatment.

Redness

What is it? Why does it happen?

What is it:  Skin is flushed in appearance. The skin is reacting to the heat build up or disruption in the skin which causes a change from your baseline skin tone.

Why does it happen: Skin is reacting to any changes made to the different layers of the skin. Heat can cause the blood vessels in the 2nd layer of the skin to widen in an attempt to cool down the body. This response can cause the skin to become flushed in appearance.

Rough texture

What is it? Why does it happen?

What is it: Uneven texture to the skin and/or the feeling of dryness.

Why does it happen: After a Fractional and Ultra Duo laser facial your skin may feel a bit rough and dry, which just means your skin is resurfacing. The micro-channels created from the laser cause a surge of cell renewal helping your skin build new skin cells while pushing out the old, resulting in smoother feeling and looking skin.

Hives

What is it? Why does it happen?

What is it: Red, itchy, elevated area on the skin

Why does it happen: Reaction in the skin to heat or to an allergen

Pro tips from our nurses:

+ PUT A HYDRATING SHEET MASK IN THE FRIDGE! THE COOLNESS WILL FEEL GREAT ON YOUR SKIN.

+ WASH AND CHANGE YOUR PILLOWCASES.

+ WIPE YOUR CELL PHONE CLEAN WITH AN ANTI-BACTERIAL WIPE.

+ WASH YOUR MAKEUP BRUSHES.

Consistency

Why is it important?

Imagine wanting to be physically fit, without ever exercising.

Sadly, it doesn't work like that, and neither does great skin. At Skin Laundry, we believe healthy skin is achieved through consistency. There is no magic potion, lotion, serum, or treatment that can fix your skin concerns with just one use. To us, the key to success looks like:

Consistency + Realistic Expectations = Great Skin

How to achieve consistency: with products

Use a one-in, one-out policy for introducing new products so you can tell what works and what doesn’t.

Treat it like a science experiment in 6th grade, only one variable at a time! That way if you experience a reaction (good or bad) you know why. Also, take progress pictures! This will help you visualize what’s changing over time.

How to achieve consistency: with treatments

Everyone’s skin is unique and results will vary.

Treat it like a science experiment in 6th grade, only one variable at a time! That way if you experience a reaction (good or bad) you know why. Also, take progress pictures! This will help you visualize what’s changing over time.

Play the long game

Enjoy the journey and choose to commit to yourself!

If you want to be physically in shape, going to the gym just once isn't enough. You build up to get yourself as healthy as you can and then maintain those results. The same goes for skin care, It's not a one and done. You didn't suddenly wake up with sun damage and wrinkles, so you can't expect them to diminish overnight.

What 5 months of consistency could do!

Skin Types

What is the Fitzpatrick scale?

The Fitzpatrick scale is a skin classification system first developed in 1975 by Thomas Fitzpatrick, MD, of Harvard Medical School.

The system classifies skin type by the amount of melanin pigment in the skin and your skin’s reaction to sun exposure. Types range from Type 1 (lightly pigmented) to Type 6 (heavily pigmented).

Skin Type 1

Skin Type 1

Ivory or almost white skin that always freckles, burns and peel but never tans; blue, gray or green eyes; red or light blonde hair.

Skin Type 2

Skin Type 2

Fair or pale skin that usually freckles often burns and peels rarely tans; blue, green or gray eyes; red or blonde hair.

Skin Type 3

Skin Type 3

Fair to beige with golden undertones that might freckle, sometimes burns and tans; hazel or light brown eyes; dark blonde or light brown hair.

Skin Type 4

Skin Type 4

Olive or light brown rarely freckles, rarely burns, and tans often, dark brown eye; dark brown hair.

Skin Type 5

Skin Type 5

Darker shade of brown but not very dark always tan and never burn; dark brown to black eyes and hair.

Skin Type 6

Skin Type 6

Deeply pigmented dark brown to darkest brown always tans and never burn; brownish black eyes and hair.

Why is this important?

Our laser facials are safe and effective for all skin types which is rare for laser facials.

Our team of dermatologists have created protocols for our Registered Nurses to treat every skin type but it’s important that they assess your skin each visit to ensure the correct settings on our lasers are being used.ries.

Why our laser facials are safe and effective for all?

The depth of the wavelength in our Nd:YAG bypasses the top layer of the skin where pigment lives and goes straight to the second layer of the skin.  The second layer is safe from discoloration and instead targets collagen, melasma, sunspots, and redness. The wavelength of our Fractional laser is uniquely designed to be non-ablative and targets irregular texture, fine lines and wrinkles, and dead skin cells.

Sun Safety

Moderation & protection is key

We get it, being bathed in sunshine feels good!

The Vitamin D, warmth, improvement in mood and fun outdoor activities are just some of the positives of sunlight. However, too much time in the sun can lead to wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer. So, here’s everything you need to know to stay safe & have fun in the sun!

What is UV exposure?

UV rays travel from the sun, through our atmosphere, and reflect off surfaces such as snow, water, sand, and pavement. They also penetrate through windows and clouds. UV exposure is usually highest and most powerful between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

UVA rays = Aging skin
UVB rays = Damaged skin

The other 5% of UV rays are UVB.

They are the cause of sunburns and directly damage DNA and can be the cause of many skin cancers.

Fun sun fact

Sun damage can take a few years to show.

However, it can instantly deplete the collagen in your skin which leads to a loss of elasticity...AKA wrinkles!

How to protect yourself

+ Choose sunscreen that offers “broad-spectrum protection”. This means it has the ability to block out both UVA and UVB rays. Try our Daily Moisturizer Broad Spectrum with SPF 35!

+ SPF should be reapplied at least every 2 hours.

+ Wear SPF even when you’re inside and on cloudy days.

Shop SPF
More ways to protect yourself

+ Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to provide additional protection to your ears and neck and eyes.

+ Routinely examine your skin for moles or spots that are new, changing, or unusually shaped.

Pregnancy & Nursing

Are lasers safe?

YES! Our lasers are safe for pregnant women!

The only treatment that can not be performed is the Glow Peel. If you are coming in for a Fractional Laser facial, we will substitute medical-grade serums with the Ultra Hydration Boost serum.

Collagen

What is collagen?

It’s one of the major building blocks of bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Think of it as the “glue” that holds all these things together.

Where can collagen be found?

+ Supplements

+ Bone broth

+ Gelatin + Chicken Skin

+ Pork Skin

What reduces collagen?

There are a few things that can lower the amount of collagen we produce in our bodies.

Activities like extended sun exposure, excess sugar, smoking, and drinking alcohol may reduce the synthesis of collagen. We also naturally stop producing the same levels of collagen at the age of 21 for women and 25 for men.

How can you stimulate collagen production?

Our Laser Facials!

+ Vitamin A Serum

+ Protein-rich Foods

+ Vitamin C

+ Collagen Supplements
